Sisters and Brothers,

The recent announcement of mass closures at GM plants is threatening families in Michigan, Ohio and Maryland. This is another example of a mega corporation that, while profitable, has decided that instead of retooling facilities and keeping jobs in the United States they would instead rather eliminate jobs at home and offshore that work to other countries.

GM has received over $600 MILLION in federal contracts since 2016. Over HALF A BILLION $$$ in tax cuts from the corporate rates being lowered.

$100 MILLION used to buy back their own stock just this year. Their CEO Marry Barra received a $22 MILLION DOLLAR compensation package. That is almost 5% of the TOTAL tax cuts just going to the CEO’s compensation package.

That wasn’t what the tax cuts were intended for. It was not what we were promised. They were lowered to spur job creation and help drive better wages for middle class workers.

“Drive it Home” is a collaborative effort bringing together the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce and UAW local 1112, along with local business, community and religious leaders, Workers, consumers and their families, to urge General Motors to support growing their investment here in the United States. (If GM was a Patriot American.)

There were times when CWA, UAW, Teamsters, Steelworkers, Teachers, Electrical Workers, Letter Carriers, Nurses, Painters, Carpenters and other Unions could all stand individually and hold the line against corporate greed. That line is stretching thin. Unions have been chipped away at for years. It’s time for all of us to stand together. A closure at a UAW plant is a blow to organized labor just like a closure to a CWA call center is. It’s the same epidemic of offshoring and outsourcing that is plaguing hard working middle class American workers.

We must stand united and say with one voice that we do not accept this destructive corporate greed. The avarice and need for opulence beyond imagination is destroying the country that we workers have built. I urge you to give a like to the Drive It Home Facebook Fan Page and to speak out with them against what GM is planning with their plant closures. Those facilities can still be used for other endeavors. Those workers who have been with them for years can be re-skilled to meet the demands of tomorrow. A company who prospers so greatly and receives so much from American tax dollars owes it to them.

Shame on you GM.

I’ve spoken to UAW 1112 President Dave Green and he is far from done with this fight. Let us show him that an injury to one is an injury to all. No more free passes for Corporations who exploit our tax dollars.
